Ask any of my grandchildren what Poppy's number one rule is, and they will tell you, "Always use the right tool!" There is, however, an important second part to that rule: "In the right way!"
I was reminded of this while reading an article by Marc Forget in the May/June 2026 issue of the Journal of Light Construction. Marc discussed choosing and using your first specialty tool. Under the heading "Ask Yourself Honest Questions," he posed three questions that caught my attention:
- “Will this improve my work?”
- “Will I use it often enough to make me money?”
- “Will this make the work easier?”
While Marc was discussing tools for construction professionals, I immediately thought about the business owners and executives I coach. These same three questions apply to the tools we use to run our businesses.
1. Will this improve my business?
Many business owners are very good at doing the technical work of their business. However, being a great plumber, architect, physician, or contractor doesn't necessarily mean you know how to run a successful business.
The ActionCOACH Business Operating System (ABoS) provides a comprehensive framework for operating a business. Rather than addressing individual problems in isolation, it brings together the essential elements of business management, including planning, marketing, sales, financial management, team development, and systems.
2. Will I use it often enough to make me money?
A tool sitting unused in your toolbox doesn't generate a return on your investment. Neither does a business operating system that is implemented inconsistently.
ABoS is not intended to be something you take off the shelf when there's a problem. It is designed to become part of how you operate your business every day. Consistent implementation, measurement, and accountability are essential to producing results.
Remember, having the right tool is only half the equation. You must also use it the right way!
3. Will this make running my business easier?
How many business owners and executives do you know who regularly work 60, 70, or even 80 hours per week? Perhaps you're one of them.
A properly implemented business operating system can help you develop a team that takes responsibility, establishes processes that produce consistent results, and free you from constantly putting out fires.
The objective is to spend more time working ON your business rather than IN it.
Now, Ask Yourself Some Honest Questions!
Are you running your business with a comprehensive operating system, or are you relying on a collection of disconnected tools, habits, and processes?
Are those tools delivering the results you want?
Most importantly, are you enjoying the financial and personal rewards that should come from owning or leading a successful business?
If your answers leave something to be desired, let's talk about how ABoS can help you build a more profitable, efficient, and valuable business.
