Is Your Leadership Team Growing as Fast as Your Business?

Why does every big decision still land on your desk?

You've hired good people. You've given them titles. But when something important comes up, it still finds its way back to you. And the bigger the business gets, the more that pattern costs you.

The business outgrew the team

This happens in a lot of growing companies. The people who helped build the business were promoted because they were great at their jobs. Your best salesperson became the sales manager. Your most reliable technician now runs operations.

But leading a team is a different job than doing the work. Without support, new leaders fall back on what they know: doing it themselves, or sending it up the ladder to you.

The result? A leadership team in name, and a bottleneck at the top.

Signs your leaders need more development

  1. Meetings end without clear decisions or owners
  2. Problems get reported to you instead of solved
  3. Leaders protect their department instead of thinking about the whole company
  4. You're the only one who holds people accountable
  5. Good employees leave because of their manager

If two or three of these sound familiar, it's not a people problem. It's a development problem.

What a strong executive team does differently

Strong leadership teams share a few habits. They agree on where the company is going and what matters most this quarter. They talk openly, even when it's uncomfortable. They hold each other accountable, not just their direct reports. And they make decisions at the right level, so the owner can focus on the future instead of the fire drill.

None of that happens by accident. It's built, one conversation and one habit at a time.

Where to start

Ask your team two questions:

  1. What decisions do you wish you could make without coming to me?
  2. What's getting in the way?

Their answers will show you where the gaps are: clarity, trust, skills or systems.

From there, invest in your leaders the same way you'd invest in equipment or technology. Give them a shared plan, regular time to work on the business together, and someone outside the company to coach them through the hard parts.

Let's talk about your team

I work with leadership teams across Erie and northwest Pennsylvania, from family companies to nonprofits and growing organizations. The goal is simple: a team that can lead, so you don't have to carry everything yourself.

If your business is growing faster than your leaders, let's grab a coffee and talk it through. No pitch, just a conversation about where your team is today and where it needs to be.
